The Vodyanoi is said to be a fallen angel that was cast down into the water by Archangel Michael. He lives in a shining underwater palace with equsisite furnishings and chandeliers and considers himself a property owner in charge of the fish and spirits residing within his pool or pond.

He most commonly lives in the deepest part of a mill pond and when a new mill is built he will seek revenge by taking at least one human sacrfice becasue it tampers with his habitat.

Vodyanoi is described as appearing as an old man with a green beard covered in muck, or sometimes covered in scales. Some cliam that he is half-fish, and half-man, and some beleive he has a tail. Most beleive that he never comes all the way up to the surface of the water and that he rarely moves from his site which is usually near a damn of a mill wheel. He is held responsible for all local drownings and further more, if anyone attempts to retrive a body it will cause an act of retaliation.

The Vodyanoi is reputed to have a single-minded purpose and that is to drown human beings. The only poeple he mantains a special relationship with are the miller and a few fishermen. The miller is suspected of being a sorcerer whom has made a pact with the Vodyanoi and is thought to dine with him sometimes in the underwater palace.

To aver human sacrifice local folks would use a chicken ot a black rooster in sacrifical rites, this usually placates the Vodyanoi. It is also said that crossing oneself before entering the water may lessen any problems upon a close encounter. Fishermen make offerings of bread, salt, vodka, and tabacoo to ensure his help, for he said to punnish fishermen whom agrivate him by hiding the fish and ripping the nets.
