Shamansin is most often considered to be what is called animisim, which is most often viewed as a primitive beleif in giving animation to objects that occur in nature, as well as objects that are considered to be inaniment. It is also a beleif system that gives what are thought to be "human traits" to animals.

A big part of Shamanisim is working with spirits, and the Shaman is often seen as the imediator between this world and the spirit, and are thought to hold the ablity to contorl and communicate with spirits. It is beleived they can both heal and cause harm using the spirits.

In many cases Shamans are often as having the ablity to travel out of thier body into the world, and often the use of ritulsitic drugs are a big part of Shamansim, as it is seen these drugs allow the Shaman to alter his state of mind and allow him to travel out of his body.

In some traditions the Shaman is seen as a shap-shifter and having shape shifting ablity, in some cases it is beleived in a litteral, and phsycial way, that is that the Shaman can physcialy transform into the animal of his chooseing, or in some cases, into the form of his totem animal. Though the common beleif is that if he stays in the form for too long he will not be able to come back and will be lost forever in the animal spirit.

In other traditions the shape-shifting is seen on more of a spiritual level, in which it is beleived that when the Shaman sleeps, he has another spirit, an animal spirit that then takes over, though the Shamans body does not physcialy change, the animal spirt is released and can run free. This beleif is centered around the idea that Shamans have twol spirits, thier human spirit and thier animal spirit. When they are awake thier animal spirit is asleep, and when they are alseep thier animal spirit becomes awake.
