Thor is the son of Odin, and Jord, the Earth Goddess, and is the strongest of the Aesir, a collective name for the principle race of Norse Gods. Those who lived in Asagard with the All-Father, Odin, and ruled over mortal men.

Thor was known as the god of Thunder, and his hall was Bilskirnr which was located in the region of Thrudheim (Place of Might). He married the golden-haird Sif, Goddees of fertility and kept a mistress, Jarnsaxa, (iron cutlass) a giantess, with whom he had two sons Magni and Modi, and a daughter Thrud.

Thor is commonly portrayed as a large powerful man, with a red beard, flowing hair, hearty enjoyment for food and drink, and eyes of lighting. Despite his freocuous apperance he was quite popular and protector of Gods and humans alike against forces of evil. He even surpassed his father Odin in popularity becasue unlike his father, Thor did not require human sacrifice.

The Norse believed that during a thunderstorm, Thor rode through the heavens on his chariot pulled by the goats Tanngrisni ("gap-tooth") and Tanngnost ("tooth grinder"). Lightning flashed whenever he threw his hammer Mjollnir. Thor wears the belt Megingjard which doubles his already considerable strength.

The name Thursday derives from Thor
