I was inspired to write this based upon a topic on another bord that I particpate at.
One of the things that made the Egyptians so unique I think, is the fact that though many of thier gods to have a human form, or body, unlike that Greeks/Romans, Celts, Norse, and other many more famillar Traditional Beleif system, many of the Egyptian gods were not humanized or bound to only human forms, they worshiped gods in animal form and many of thier gods were personified as or related to a particuarly animal.
It is common that many of thier gods, even those that are given human body hold the head of an animal, or other animal parts, and usually they are known by that animal. For example, Anubis was called the Jackle Headed God, and Horus was called the Falcon Headed God.
Isis is portrayed in having a bird form, and in one of her stories was said to have taken the shape of a bird, and Maat is protrayed as having feathered wings. Hathor has the head of a cow. Thoth as he is popuarly known, originaly called Djeheuty by the Egyptians had the head of an Ibis and so on.
In addition personifying thier gods with animal parts, there were many animals that were highly revered and seen as divine or akin to the gods themselves in Egyptian beleif. The most comon are cats and cannines, an assortment of different canines, wolves, jackles, foxes etc.. were given god like status or seen as being sacred to varrious different gods.
Crocodiles were also highly revered by the Egyptians and were worshiped as gods. Sabek the Crocodile God was a very imporant God that was worshiped as a fertility god, and a controler of water.
This is only to list a few there are many more examples of Egyptian animal worship.
