The Rakshasas (Night Wanderers) is a species of asuras, Hindu Demons, who inhabit the forest of Lanka and appear in every conceivable shap and form but tend to extremes in height. They are either unusally tall or very small. Many Rakshasas have potbellies and animal heads, most popular are elephant, horse, and snake heads. With fanglike, razor-sharp, protruding teeth. Some are beautiful.
According to other reports thier eyes flame and thier tounges hang down at great lengths and they have horns. Rakshasas sometimes appear in human form, and they generally have red hair, huge ears, wide mouths that go virtually from ear to ear, and a single arm, leg, or eye. Or sometimes three of each.
Rakshasas have been known to devour horses and human beings, then inhabit and reanimate the corpse and shape shift into birds particuarly vulture and owls. They less frequently take the form of dogs, deer, and men (usually married men with the intent of deciving thier wives) and beautiful seductive women. They can enter a person by the mouth while he is eating or drinking and are most dangerous during a woman's pregnancy.
One type of Rakshasa known as Pisacas, dwells in the towns water supply and can make people waste away. This type is frequently seen hanging about cemetaries becasue they are corpse eaters. They have an exeedingly gaunt look, thier ribs stick far out, and thier hair stands on end.
